During the months of September and October the big grasses and later flowering perennials come into their own . The effects and combinations are certainly worth talking about ,so why not come and join Paul or Pauline on one of their Walks on the Wildside.

Birds, Bees and Butterflies - Needle felting workshop with Mo Jackson

Saturday 8th June 2013 2pm -5pm

Needle felting is a dry felting process which involves no sewing, instead it uses a special needle with notches. By prodding the needle into the wool fibres this makes the fibres knit together, allowing you to make any shape you like... a kind of moulding in wool. In this workshop we will be making a variety of birds, bees and butterflies. It’s easy and fun, come and give it a go! All materials provided.

Garden Jewellery - Clay Workshops with Barbara Collins

Come and learn how to make beautiful 'jewellery' for your garden inspired by the plants at the Sussex Prairies Garden . Sussex Prairies is located at the base of the South Downs only 20 minutes from Brighton.Ceramicist Barbara Collins makes mobiles and flowers and will guide you through the process of designing and making your own using porcelain clay.

Dates: Saturday 15th June 2013 and Monday 1st July 2013.
Time: 10.30am until 4.30pm Cost: £60

Please bring a packed lunch which you are free to enjoy in the garden. You will receive a complimentary cup of tea or coffee and homemade biscuits on your arrival. Thereafter you may purchase tea/coffee and homemade cakes from the teashop.

Your completed work will be fired by Barbara at her Brighton studio and be available to collect from the Sussex Prairies Garden approximately two weeks later.

Garden Sketchbook Workshop -with Sue Wood

Sunday 2nd June 10am until 4pm

This one day workshop will be led by local artist Sue Wood, who has many years’ experience of helping people develop their creativity. Sue will focus on the varied techniques needed to begin a sketchbook or visual diary, using the inspiring gardens of Sussex Prairies as a starting point. She will demonstrate techniques such as collage, printing and stamping, and creative approaches to sketching and lettering that will enable you to put together exciting pages in your book from the outset. Students will have full access to the garden and will be able to pick flowers to press, draw or print from.
Do bring along any art materials you may have, such as pencils, paints and pastels, together with an A4/A5 sized sketchbook. A range of materials will be available for use at the workshop. Sue can also offer advice to anyone who would like to include photographs in their sketchbook, so bring along any photos you already have, along with your camera to record the garden on the day.
The workshop will run from 10am-4pm with a break for lunch, so do bring a picnic.

Pottery: Drop in Workshops- with artist in residence Sue Wood

every afternoon from 1pm until 5pm

Local artist Sue Wood will be in residence at the Prairies from Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th August. Sue will be demonstrating the making of large scale coiled pots and will have clay and tools available for those who want to make their own pot or tile. The cost will be £5 per item and these can be taken home on the day. A fitting souvenir of a visit to these beautiful gardens, which have a creative surprise around every corner.

Felted Flowers - with Mo Jackson

Thursday 27th June 2013 1pm -4pm

Felted flowers can be as varied as the real thing. You will be guided step-by-step though the ‘wet felting’ process. Wool fibres are massaged together with soap and warm water to form the felted flowers. Come and be inspired by the garden and make a corsage for yourself or as a gift for a friend...if you can bear to give them away! All materials provided.

Felted Art - with Mo Jackson

Friday 16th August June 2013 1pm -4pm

In this workshop you will be bonding wool fibres onto a fabric base, this is called ‘nuno felting’. Wool fibres are laid down on the fabric in the design of your creation. Warm water and soap are added. The wool and fabric are rolled in bubble wrap and aggitated back and forth untill they fuse together. The end result is your own felted fabric art. Come and set YOUR wooly creativity free.All materials provided.

Felted Soap & Pebbles - with Mo Jackson

Saturday 24th August 2013 1pm -4pm

Felting around objects is fun and very therapeutic. The felted soap is good to use as an exfoliator in the bath. It also shrinks with the soap! Bring your own bars of soap if you prefer. Felted pebbles are lovely tactile objects that can be used as paper weights or just to have as decoration on a table. Both are great to give as gifts. All materials provided.

Writing in a Landscape - A creative writing Workshop with Julia Widdows

Led by novelist and award-winning short story writer Julia Widdows, an experienced teacher of creative writing. Whether your interest is in fiction, non-fiction, poetry, or memoir, bring existing work-in-progress or new ideas you want to explore – or just a notebook, and see where the day takes you. Yoga on the Prairies - Summer yoga programme with Carla and Sarah- every Saturday starting from 29th June 2013

Why not come and join us for our for our summer season of yoga classes in the beautiful surroundings of the Sussex Prairie Garden. Enjoy the peace and tranquility of practicing yoga, pranayama and relaxation in this very special natural setting. Through the summer months the garden is full of birdsong ,bees and butterflies and acts as a perfect backdrop to the classes.
Our classes will be led by Carla (British Wheel of Yoga) or Sarah (British Wheel of Yoga & KHYF)

Willow Garden Structures weaving with Jackie Sweet

Enjoy a wonderful day making a variety of useful and beautiful garden structures and plant supports out of willow with local willow expert Jackie Sweet. Jackie has been making willow baskets and garden structures for over 12 years and is a very experienced teacher. Learn how to make obelisks for growing sweet peas, beans and even pumpkins up as well as different kinds of trellis, fans and domed plant supports. This day will give you the skills to create structures and plant supports that are both extremely useful and are as well a valuable addition to your garden, enhancing its beauty.

Cost for the day £80 which includes teas, coffees and a piece of homemade cake as well as the chance to enjoy the spectacular gardens at your leisure. Places limited to ensure a good amount of one to one tuition.

Designing with grasses & perennials in a naturalistic style with Sussex Prairies & The Garden House
